Meet Dan
Background
Dan Marcellus is an educator, drummer and live show playback producer (specialized in Ableton Live). A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, Dan has spent more than twenty-three years teaching everyone from six-year-olds picking up drumsticks for the first time to seasoned professionals preparing for tours and recording sessions.
Along the way, Dan has built a career as a drummer, musical director and playback technician, touring and working with artists including Harry Styles, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, ZAYN, Blood Orange, and Chet Faker. Students—especially teenagers—love hearing stories about working with that level of artist, and Dan enjoys weaving those into his lessons, with purpose.
When he's not teaching, Dan produces, mixes and records drums from his studio in Connecticut, where he lives with his wife and three children. He is also a lower school substitute teacher at King School in Stamford, CT.
Teaching Philosophy
Dan believes that students learn best when they feel safe, supported, and understood. Rather than rushing toward the answer, he teaches students how to slow down, break problems into manageable pieces, and think with patience and confidence. Those habits extend far beyond music, helping students become more resilient, patient, focused, independent, and better equipped to navigate challenges in school and in life.
For younger students, drumming is also wonderfully physical. It gives energetic kids a healthy outlet to move, explore, create, and quite literally get the wiggles out. At a time when so much of childhood happens on screens, Dan believes there is tremendous value in giving children something tactile, creative, and completely rooted in the real world. Making music engages the body, the brain, and the imagination in ways that no app or AI tool can replicate.
Across the student spectrum, Dan's favorite part of teaching is watching that aha moment where students finally break through and unlock a skills they've been working on for months.

Why now?
After stepping away from touring in 2020 to become a stay-at-home dad, Dan gained an even deeper appreciation for slowing down and teaching; balancing family and work without being on the road.
Inspired by his kids and new community in Connecticut, Dan has decided to prioritize teaching again after taking a break to tour & produce music (2013-2020) and then to be a full-time dad (2020-now) - while only retaining a handful of private lesson students. Dan has set up a home studio where he records drums, produces, mixes and now teaches.

I know that dropping your child off in a new environment can be tricky. As a father of 3, I appreciate transparency. I am pleased to offer password protected zoom links for parents who are more comfortable observing the lessons. You can also hang out in our waiting room - whatever makes you feel comfortable!
